Words Are Food: A View of Writing

Words are food, and anyone can cook them up, can’t they?

We know there are different ways to write a hamburger.

• We can assess it into a ball and report it flattened on a grill.
• We can brainstorm ingredients and make proposals for new recipes.
• We can remember our mom’s burger, and pair that memory with the emotion we invest in today’s sandwich.
• We can analyze ingredient sourcing.
• We can advocate for veggie burgers.

Assess; then report. Brainstorm; then create. Remember; then pair memory with emotion. Analyze; then advocate.

The tone of the written hamburger also comes in all varieties. Some burgers are cafeteria fare that announce their marching orders. Some convey the flavor of ambition, while some merely accompany the reader in celebration. It is the rare burger that advocates for introspection.

The word-chef, that is, the writer possessing the proper qualifications, holds a special power:
